One week away
So I am about a week away from embarking on a journey to Africa. I will be primarily in the city of Kumasi which is in the country of Ghana in Western Africa. I am going to be spending most of my summer there (approximately 80 days) and am doing independent research/study related to the field of social work. I am going as an ambassador of the University of Utah and the College of Social Work and it will suffice some elective credits to go towards a master's degree. There will be a range of things for me to do but I am interested in areas of trauma and/or grief and loss but I will also be looking at how care is handled for persons with disabilities, how palliative care is handled, the structure of the school systems and how social work practice is done as well as their internships. I will develop a more specific routine once I arrive but am coordinating with Dr. Caren Frost to make specific plans while I am there. I've gotten all of my shots and payed all of my dues and am as ready as I can be. I've watched a few videos and seen some great pictures so I kind of know what to expect, geographically speaking. I will thank many more along the way but for starters, I couldn't have made this happen without Dr. Nate Bryan (I am absolutely grateful) and my grandparents for contributing what they did. I look forward to the opportunity and will use this blog to update my experience.
